Three Waters ‘Better Off’ funding helps accelerate Rotorua’s aquatic centre makeover

The second phase of Rotorua Aquatic Centre’s makeover is about to get underway, thanks to an $8.05m contribution from Central Government.

The second phase of Rotorua Aquatic Centre’s makeover is about to get underway, thanks to an $8.05m contribution from Central Government to the $23.45m cost for this stage. The Government’s contribution is through Rotorua Lakes Council’s entitlement under the Three Waters Reform ‘Better Off’ funding.

The Three Waters Reform ‘Better Off’ funding is designed to support wider local wellbeing outcomes, alongside the improvements being made to three waters management and service delivery, which will also contribute to community wellbeing. The Aquatic Centre makeover fits the bill as a much-loved community asset that needs revitalisation and modernisation to continue to serve the community safely.

This stage of the project will focus on upgrading the main pool hall, including installing a transparent roof with UV protection, relining of the leisure pool and refurbishing the reception and indoor changing rooms. The previous stage focused on refurbishment of the 50m outdoor pool and the outdoor changing rooms and these were completed in March 2021.

For more details on the project, see Rotorua Lakes District Council’s press release here.
